Value-at-Risk model for hazardous material transportation

چکیده
This paper introduces a Value-at-Risk (VaR) model to generate route choices for a hazmat shipment based on a specified risk confidence level. The objective is to determine a route which minimizes the likelihood that the risk will be greater than a set threshold. Several properties of the VaR model are established. An exact solution procedure is proposed and tested to solve the single-trip problem. To test the applicability of the approach, routes obtained from the VaR model are compared with those obtained from other hazmat objectives, on a numerical example as well as a hazmat routing scenario derived from the Albany district of New York State. Depending on the choice of the confidence level, the VaR model gives different paths from which we conclude that the route choice is a function of the level of risk tolerance of the decision-maker. Further refinements of the VaR model are also discussed.

Developing a Bi-level Objective Model of Risk-Cost Trade-off for Solving Locating-Routing Problem in Transportation of Hazardous Material
Allocating and routing problems in the field of transportation engineering are generally solved using the objective function of minimizing transport cost. Transport risk is a main concern in hazardous material transportation, mainly dependent on the vision of decision makers (national and/or local authorities). In this research work, a trade-off approach has been proposed to determine the safes...
متن کاملApplication of Chaos Theory in Hazardous Material Transportation
Risk factors are generally defined and assigned to road networks, as constant measures in hazmat routing problems. In fact, they may be dynamic variables depending on traffic volume, weather and road condition, and drivers' behavior. In this research work, risk factors are defined as dynamic variables using the concept of chaos theory. The largest Lyapunov exponent is utilized to determine the ...
متن کاملDesign of 7×24 logistics system for hazardous materials (case study: distribution of gasoline)
The transportation of hazardous materials such as gasoline has unique features due to the nature of these type of materials and the importance role of these material in human life. Therefore, determining the routing of these materials is more challengeable than non-hazardous one due to more dangerous and risky condition besides the transportation costs. Since the distribution of gasoline take p...
متن کاملA ROUTING METHODOLOGY FOR HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TRANSPORTATION TO REDUCE THE RISK OF ROAD NETWORK
Abstract: The shipments of hazardous materials (HAZMATs) induce various risks to the road network. Today, one of the major considerations of transportation system managers is HAZMATs shipments, due to the increasing demand of these goods (because it is more used in industry, agriculture, medicine, etc.), and the rising number of incidents that are associated to hazardous materials. This paper ...
